Moreover, it performs an important job of managing the heat of the central processing unit. In particular, it is launched when the system receives signals about certain programs and processes consuming the CPU power in anomalous amounts. What is Kernel_Task? When you find that the process named kernel_task is using up a lot of your CPU power, the first thing that might come to your mind is that it is malicious. Well, it is not. It is a core component of macOS in charge of managing CPU temperature to prevent your system from overheating. Kernel task (seen as kernel_task in Activity Monitor) is a system level function that essentially controls your operating system.

Kernel task

High CPU load by kernel_task often means that your Mac is getting too hot somewhere, or is at risk of heating up. In the example quoted above, the cause is in a thermal sensor placed by the left USB-C ports in many MacBook Pro models. kernel_task isn’t causing the thermal problem, it’s part of your Mac’s response to it.

Kernel task

High CPU load by kernel_task often means that your Mac is getting too hot somewhere, or is at risk of heating up.

It does not itself cause those conditions. The kernel_task process is at the core of your Mac’s operating system. Think of it as your MacBook’s hypothalamus (a part of the human brain that controls body temperature). The primary function of the (kernel task) process is to regulate the temperature of your Mac’s CPU. Kernel_task isn’t a malicious entity or anything – it’s a service built into macOS. Moreover, it performs an important job of managing the heat of the central processing unit.

kernel_task was taking even 1000% CPU (dunno why if I have 8 cores) and even booting in safe mode. Then after reading this thread I disconnected the external monitor connected to mini display port and kernel_task went back to normal.

When the temperature of the processor decreases, kernel_task automatically reduces its activity. Hi guys, I´m looking for help. The kernel_task file takes almost 5gb of my memory and I have 8gb on my mid 2013 Macbook Air. Running 10.9.5. Seriously I cannot work anymore. All my applications run out of memory.
